MycoMap BC: A DNA Sequencing Project

MycoMap BC is a community-science driven project using iNaturalist and DNA sequencing to document fungal biodiversity across British Columbia. Through the project, anyone can make collections of fungi and slime moulds and submit them for sequencing. Together, weโ€™re building a comprehensive and high quality data base of fungi in BC.

Why contribute to this project? ๐“Š๐“‹ผ๐“Š๐“‹ผ๐“Š

When compared to the West Coast of the United States, British Columbia has comparatively very little DNA data on our fungi. While weโ€™ve been able to learn a lot from the DNA sequencing done in neighbouring states like Washington, British Columbia undoubtedly has much of its own unique biodiversity that has yet to be thoroughly mapped. By making DNA sequencing for fungi and slime moulds free and available to everyone across the province, anyone can help by providing valuable data on specimens near them. Over time, these collections will help us develop a much more robust understanding of fungal diversity in British Columbia.

Results?

Once your collections are sent to the MycoMap muster point at the University of Victoria, they will be stored there until a batch is sent to Mycota Lab. It will typically take at least 3-4 months or more before sequences are available. Once tissue has been sampled at the lab, it will be mailed to Indiana for sequencing. Once data is available, each specimen must be individually validated before results are uploaded to iNaturalist. There is autovalidation, so you may receive a large number of results at once.

Every Collection & Validation Helps!

You never know when something may be interesting or new! Some of the first iNat observations in BC have been of very "regular" looking mushrooms.

BC iNat Firsts

This project is for all the collections from the MycoMap BC project that mark a first observation on iNaturalist for that species. This can include temp-coded observations.

New BC 'Temp' Codes

This project is for observations from the MycoMap BC project that prompted the creation of a new temporary code. This is the term used for undescribed or uncertain fungal taxa until formal names can be assigned.

Learn How to Validate!

We want to teach you a new skill! Learn how to validate DNA barcodes and put names on MycoMap BC collections.

No previous experience with genetics or biology is necessary. We meet multiple times a week, where you can discuss and observe.
